10 nights through Canada

Ten nights and 2,800 kilometres from Montreal to Halifax in a motorhome, by way of the Gaspe and the New Brunswick coast.

Riviere-du-Loup comes first down the St Lawrence, then the long run out to Perce, which gets several days: a limestone rock pierced by an arch stands offshore, and Bonaventure Island beyond it holds one of the largest northern gannet colonies anywhere.

Bathurst and Caraquet follow round the Baie des Chaleurs in Acadian New Brunswick, then Miscou Island at the north-eastern tip, reached by a bridge over the shallows, with peat bogs that turn red in autumn and a lighthouse at the end of the road. Moncton comes next, then Hopewell Rocks, where the Bay of Fundy tides are the largest in the world and the sea floor between the rock formations is walked at low water, with Truro and Elmsdale beyond.

The motorhome and the day-by-day plan come from CanaDream, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with insurance options priced at booking. Eleven days for 2,800 kilometres means real driving days once the Gaspe is behind, so this is a route with one long stay in it rather than an even spread. The season runs roughly June to September. Hopewell Rocks runs to the tide table rather than the opening hours, and the two low waters a day are about six hours apart. This is a one-way hire across three provinces, so a relocation fee is worth checking at booking.
