13 nights through Australia

Thirteen nights and 3,164 kilometres from Perth to Broome in a 4WD camper, up the Western Australian coast with a long detour inland to Karijini.

Port Denison and Kalbarri come first, then Denham on Shark Bay, where the dolphins come into the shallows at Monkey Mia and the bay is UNESCO listed for its seagrass and its dugongs. Carnarvon and Coral Bay follow, the latter sitting on Ningaloo Reef with coral a short swim from the beach.

Roebourne and Karratha come next in the Pilbara, then Tom Price and Karijini, where gorges are cut several hundred metres into rock among the oldest exposed anywhere on earth, with pools at the bottom reached by scrambling down. Marble Bar follows, which holds the Australian record for consecutive days above the hundred, and then 80 Mile Beach, Broome and Cape Leveque.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Fourteen days for 3,164 kilometres is a fair pace, and Karijini is the place that most rewards an extra night, since the gorge walks take considerably longer than the map suggests. This is a one-way hire, so a relocation fee is worth checking at booking. Dry season is the sensible window, and the Pilbara is punishing from October onwards. Broome at the end is a reward rather than a terminus, with the camel trains on Cable Beach at sunset and dinosaur footprints exposed at low tide on the rocks at Gantheaume Point.
