6 nights through Australia

Six nights and 1,635 kilometres in a loop from Adelaide in a 4WD camper, into the Flinders Ranges and back through the Barossa.

The Clare Valley and Hawker come first, then Wilpena Pound, and the two gorges are the reason for the 4WD: Bunyeroo and Brachina cut through the ranges on unsealed tracks, and Brachina is a geological corridor where the strata are signposted along the road, running through well over a hundred million years of sediment in about twenty kilometres.

The Razorback Lookout follows, then Blinman, a copper town at the highest elevation of any settlement in South Australia, with the mine open to walk through, and Parachilna, where the pub serves native game. Arkaroola comes next, a private sanctuary in granite country with its own observatories, then Rawnsley Park Station below the southern rim of the pound, and the Barossa on the way home.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Seven days for 1,635 kilometres is a reasonable pace, and the gorge tracks are the part that justifies the vehicle. Autumn and spring are the seasons here. The Flinders is also the best place in Australia to see the geology plainly, which is exactly why Brachina Gorge is signposted the way it is. The Barossa at the end is a deliberate contrast, and it means the two best known wine regions in South Australia bookend a week in the ranges.
