10 nights through Spain
Ten nights, self-guided, through the Catalan Pyrenees, a range that rises from the Mediterranean to more than 3,000 metres. Caminos describes it as a comprehensive tour of the highlights for mountain lovers, with an economy hire car and hotels arranged for you.
Mountain scenery is the main draw, and the route is built around easy access to it. The Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park has straightforward hiking trails, the valleys of Boi and Aran hold villages gathered around eleventh-century Romanesque churches, and the Cerdanya has its own micro-climate between Andorra and the Sierra de Cadi. Food is part of the plan too, notably the Cuina Volcanica of La Garrotxa.
The first two nights are in Barcelona province, with the castle at Cardona (now a parador), the salt mountain, Solsona and the monastery at Montserrat. The Val d’Aran, Boi and Aneu follow, as the gateway to the national park. Two nights around Cerdanya and La Seu d’Urgell lead to two in the Vall de Nuria, reached by rack railway to 2,000 metres. La Garrotxa Volcanic Park ends the route, with Santa Pau, Besalu and a chapel set in a crater.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,450 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 10 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
