7 nights through Portugal
Seven nights, self-guided, between Porto and the Douro valley, with an economy hire car and hotels arranged by Caminos. The route starts on the Atlantic coast in Porto and heads inland to the Douro and Alto Douro, near Pinhao.
Caminos describes the Douro as the world’s oldest and possibly most picturesque wine region, a World Heritage landscape of steep terraced vineyards. The river is the star of the trip, with boat rides, scenery and walking among the vines, and the food is as local as the wine, served in family-run adegas, the region’s taverns. A train ride from Pinhao to Pocinho is also listed as a highlight.
Three nights in Porto cover the Ribeira, a World Heritage historic centre, the iron Dom Luis I bridge to the port wine lodges across the river, the museums and a ferry to Afurada and its beach. Two nights in the Douro valley follow, with visits to quintas, the baroque stairway at Lamego and the river town of Amarante. The final two nights are in the Alto Douro, with a boat trip from Peso da Regua upriver to Pinhao, the azulejo-decorated station there, and a picnic at the viewpoint of Sao Salvador do Mundo.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,150 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 7 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
