12 nights through Portugal
Twelve nights, self-guided, on a grand loop around the north-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula, covering highlights of northern Portugal and north-west Spain. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, starting and ending the route around Porto.
Caminos lists excellent regional wines at every stop, from Port and Vinho Verde to Albarino and Toro, with distinct local cultures and food in each region. The route follows part of the Camino Portugues, the Portuguese way of St James, and moves between the Atlantic coast, the Galician rias, the red rock country of El Bierzo and the university city of Salamanca.
Two nights in Porto begin the trip, followed by two on the Minho coast, with Caminha, the fortress towns on the border and Viana do Castelo. The Rias Bajas take two nights, with beaches, Finisterre, the Roman lighthouse at La Coruna and fishing villages. El Bierzo and Las Medulas take two more, with Ponferrada’s Templar castle and Villafranca del Bierzo on the Camino. Salamanca takes two nights, with Toro and Rueda wines and the Arribes del Duero. The last two nights are in the Douro valley, with a boat trip, Amarante and Lamego.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,650 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 12 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
