7 nights through Portugal
Seven nights, self-guided, on a short wine route through northern and central Portugal. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, and the route runs one way from Porto to Viseu.
The trip begins with the history of the Port wine trade and its strong British links in Porto’s wine lodges. It continues into the Alto Douro, where the wines are produced, with striking scenery and picture-postcard villages, then heads south to Viseu, the granite-built capital of the Dao wine region. Caminos describes Viseu as lesser known but important in Portuguese history, with plenty to see and do.
Two nights in Porto cover the Ribeira, a World Heritage historic centre, the Dom Luis I bridge to the port wine lodges, the museums and a ferry to Afurada and its beach. Three nights in the Douro valley follow, with a boat trip, the World Heritage vineyards, Amarante on the river Tamega, Lamego’s famous stairway and the adega taverns. The final two nights are in Viseu and the Dao, with the Grao Vasco museum, the granite cathedral, the Dao wine route and a hike in the Sierra de Caramulo, where the Caramulo car museum is also listed.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,050 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 7 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
