11 nights through Mongolia

Twelve days, guided, on a Voge 300 Rally across Mongolia’s steppe and into the Gobi Desert.

Mongolia is described by the operator as a vast, almost untouched wilderness scattered with nomadic people. This tour is almost entirely off the beaten track: once the group leaves Ulaanbaatar there are very few roads and no traffic, since about 40 per cent of the population lives in the capital. The group follows nomadic tracks and makes its own paths across grassland, with the support crew alongside, covering about 900 km at four to six hours a day, and the operator rates it intermediate.

The first day is in Ulaanbaatar, with drinks, dinner and a briefing. Day two is an easy ride to Undurkhaan and the Kherlen River, which rises on the southern slopes of the Khentii mountains, with plenty of paved road and a stop at the 40-metre statue of Chinggis Khan on horseback. From day three the terrain opens into steppe: open grassland and valleys in Sukhbaatar Province, with a camp near Mukhkhaan village. The operator warns of marmot holes. The route continues to Baruun-Urt, and on day five to Shiliin Bogd, a sacred area on the Chinese border where men are said to go at sunrise for a prosperous year, with a night in a ger camp. The route map then shows Sainshand, Khamariin Khiid monastery and Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, with the Gobi beyond.

The price is per rider with a lower pillion rate. Accommodation is a mix of wild camping and traditional ger camps. Everything on the operator’s standard list is included: motorcycle, fuel and spares, accommodation, all meals, guides, support vehicle with crew and mechanic, airport transfers and entrance fees. Flights, visa, insurance and alcohol are not. Dates are on request.
