15 nights through Nepal

Sixteen days, guided, on a Royal Enfield 410cc Himalayan, from Kathmandu to the old Kingdom of Mustang and back.

Mustang has been open to foreigners only since the 1990s, and the operator says it keeps its remote Himalayan feel, high in the mountains close to the Tibetan border. This tour is rated extreme: it is physically challenging, with high altitude and difficult terrain, and the operator recommends it only for riders with experience and a good level of fitness. It covers about 1,250 km at four to six hours of riding a day, on and off road.

The first night is in Kathmandu, where the driver meets riders at the airport, followed by a short briefing and a welcome dinner. On day two the group rides 200 km to Pokhara, along the Trisuli River and the forest at the foot of the Himalayas, on paved roads. Day three leaves Pokhara on paved road as far as Beni, then follows the Kali Gandaki river on rougher surface to Kalopani at 2,500 metres. Day four continues towards the 8,000-metre peaks, with views of Annapurna, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri, up to Muktinath, a holy site with a temple and a Buddhist monastery, before the group backtracks to Kagbeni. The route map then shows Mustang, Lo Manthang, Tatopani, Tansen and Muglin. The operator also mentions Chitwan National Park, where a safari to see rhinos and perhaps tigers is possible, though sightings are never promised.

The price is per rider, with a single supplement of US$400 and an optional Mount Everest flight for US$300. No pillion price is listed. It covers the motorcycle, fuel and spares, guest houses and hotels, all meals, local and international guides, a support vehicle, crew and mechanic, airport transfers and entrance fees. Flights, visa, insurance and alcohol are extra.
