14 nights through Bhutan

Fifteen days, guided, across Bhutan from west to east, on a Honda NX500 or a Royal Enfield Himalayan.

The tour enters Bhutan from India and leaves it again at the far end, which lets it cross the whole country from the more visited west to the less travelled east. The operator picks out the Tiger’s Nest, the dzongs at Punakha and Trongsa, and the mountain scenery. It says there are not many straight roads in Bhutan and that the passes go up to 3,750 metres, which makes for good riding. The route covers about 1,250 km at four to six hours a day, and the operator rates it intermediate.

The first night is in New Delhi, with an early flight to Bagdogra the next morning. Taxis then cross to the border town of Phuentsholing, where the group picks up its bikes and gets a briefing. Day three is a three to four hour ride up to Paro, climbing to 2,800 metres, through changing flora and small towns. Day four is a steep walk to the Tiger’s Nest, which clings to the mountainside, with the option of a short ride or a stroll round Paro Dzong in the afternoon. Day five takes the scenic route via Haa to Thimphu, the capital, on a long windy road off the beaten track. After that the route map shows Punakha, Trongsa, Bumthang, Trashigang and Samdrup Jongkhar, before crossing back into India for Guwahati and a flight to Delhi.

The price is per rider with a lower pillion rate. It includes Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee of US$100 per day. Accommodation mixes hotels and family-run guesthouses. Flights, the Indian visa, insurance and alcohol are not included. An International Driving Permit under the Geneva Convention is needed.
