6 nights through Iceland

Seven nights round Iceland, self-guided in convoy, in a two-person campervan with an operator guide leading the way.

A campervan solves the two problems Iceland presents: the accommodation is expensive and thinly spread, and the weather makes a fixed itinerary useless. With a van and a guide watching the forecast, the route moves to wherever the sky is clear.

Reykjavik is the start, with the first night near the city or Borgarnes. The eight-day loop then runs north to Akureyri on a long 380-kilometre day, through lava fields, out to the fishing villages and fjords, past glaciers, then down to the basalt columns, the black sand beaches and the waterfalls of the south coast, with the Golden Circle and its geysers, bubbling mud springs and canyon falls before the return. Seals, puffins in their own habitat, lava tunnels, thermal baths and active volcanic valleys full of sulphurous vents fill the days, and the guide’s local knowledge is what adds the stops that are not in the guidebooks.

Eight days of compact manual two-person campervan rental with insurance, full camping equipment, all the campsites and the guiding are included; flights, travel insurance, fuel, entrance fees and food are not, and the group shops locally and cooks on the van’s grill, which is how the operator keeps the cost down. Extra insurance is available to reduce the excess. The price shown is the starting rate per person. Mid-June is the departure, for the light that barely goes at that latitude. Eight days round the island is a quick circuit but a complete one. The operator’s page gives seven nights against the six recorded here.
