Through Iceland
The South is a Super Jeep excursion along Iceland’s south coast, run by Boreal from Reykjavik. A Boreal driver-guide does the driving and guests ride as passengers, so this is a guided day rather than a self-drive trip. It is a small-group tour of 8 to 10 hours covering about 350 to 380 km, with pick-up at 8:30.
Heading south, the route passes the Hengill volcano, the greenhouse village of Hveragerði, the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and the cultivated Saga district. About 120 km east of Reykjavik the volcanoes begin, and the tour drives at the roots of the southern slopes of Eyjafjallajökull, the glacier-covered volcano that erupted in 2010.
Two waterfalls anchor the day. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss each fall about 60 m off former sea cliffs. The route also reaches the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier, which flows from the Mýrdalsjökull icecap, and the rivers running down the black sand plain of Skógasandur on their way to the Atlantic. The operator promises a chance to learn how to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull. The route can change with the season, the road, snow and weather conditions.
A snowmobiling tour can be added when conditions allow, but it is not included in the price. Boreal recommends good shoes, warm wind and waterproof clothing and sunglasses. The tour is given in English, with other languages on request, and meals are not included. Departures from hotels outside Reykjavik are available on request, as is a private tailor-made version. Price is not published on the page, so contact Boreal for a quote.
