Through Iceland
The Reykjanes Peninsula tour is a half-day Super Jeep excursion run by Boreal from Reykjavik. A Boreal driver-guide does the driving and guests ride as passengers, so this is a guided outing rather than a self-drive trip. It is a small-group tour of 4 to 5 hours, with pick-up at 8:30 or 14:30, or at another time on request.
The peninsula is close to Reykjavik and the operator describes it as one of the most volcanic areas in Iceland. Earthquakes are frequent, there are boiling fumaroles and volcanoes are rising, and the operator jokes that an eruption is expected any day but that a half-day excursion should be safe. The contents of the tour vary depending on weather conditions, so the route is flexible.
The highlights listed are the village of Hafnarfjörður, the lake Kleifarvatn and the Krísuvík geothermal area. Depending on conditions, the tour then includes either the sea cliffs in the west of the peninsula or the Hengill volcano in the east. The operator’s description of the day is half a day with the whole experience. The route can change with the season, the road, snow and weather conditions.
Boreal recommends good shoes, warm wind and waterproof clothing and sunglasses. The tour is given in English, with other languages on request, and meals are not included. Departures from hotels outside Reykjavik are available on request, as is a private tailor-made version. Price is not published on the page, so contact Boreal for a quote. It suits visitors with only a few hours to spare near the capital.
