Through Iceland
BABI is Boreal’s expedition truck for two, a former fire truck converted into a 4×4 motorhome that the operator calls your home away from home. The cab seats two. In the rental categories in Boreal’s terms you drive the truck yourself, so this is a self-drive trip rather than a guided tour, suited to a couple or a pair of friends.
Boreal describes its trucks as equipped like a home, with a shower and toilet, hot and cold water, a gas stove, a fridge, heating, Bluetooth, USB and 220V sockets and WiFi. That equipment allows stays far from the beaten track and from civilisation. The terms list a kitchen set, camping chairs and a table, bedding and towels for two people, gas bottles and a map and GPS among the items for rental categories.
The terms ask for a licence in category C1 for the two-seat MAN truck, or a licence issued before 1 June 1993, and a minimum driver age of 25. The trucks are allowed on all open F-roads, and off-road driving is forbidden.
Pick-up and drop-off are at Boreal in Reykjavik, and you should allow one to two hours at pick-up to learn how to use the truck. The operator’s page has a booking calendar to check availability before you request a booking. A guide or driver can be arranged instead under the terms categories.
