Dolomites & the Grossglockner

Five named Dolomite passes in succession, from Passo Tre Croci to the Sella, pass a lake so still it barely looks real – four nights through the Grossglockner and the Dolomites.

4 nights through the heart of the Swiss, Austrian, and Italian Alps.

Four nights from Munich over the Grossglockner and into the Italian Dolomites, with three driving days. Of the Munich routes this is the one that spends most of its time on Italian passes rather than Austrian ones.

The first drive uses the derestricted stretches of autobahn to get south quickly, then the Seisenbergklamm gorge and Zell am See before the Grossglockner lifts you over the main Alpine chain into the Puster valley. The second day is the reason to come: the Lago di Braies at first light, then the Tre Croci, the Giau, the Pordoi and the Sella, four of the great Dolomite passes in sequence, with the Seceda ridge and the Sella massif above you. The last crosses the Jaufen Pass and the Timmelsjoch, stopping at the Ice Q restaurant perched above Sölden, before the Leutasch gorge and the run home.

The Charles Hotel in Munich opens and closes the trip, with the Hotel Patris in Dobbiaco and the Tenne Lodges at Ratschings in between.

A BMW M2 and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS are the cars named, and the Dolomite passes will tell you a great deal about either. You drive alone with a curated route, an eRoadbook and navigation paired to the car, and the season runs April to October. It suits a driver who wants the Dolomites specifically, rather than the Alps in general, and who would rather spend a whole day linking Giau, Pordoi and Sella than split them across a longer trip. The Grossglockner on the way in is close to a bonus.
