Three countries, fifteen days and most of the great Alpine passes. Fourteen nights from Treviglio, around 1,970 miles, crossing the Dolomites, the Swiss Alps and the French Alps before finishing in Piedmont’s Barolo wine country.

The Italian half comes first, and it holds the better-known passes. Lake Iseo and Lake Garda lead to Trento, then the Rolle, Forcella Aurine and Giau passes to Cortina d’Ampezzo, then the Sella Group passes through the UNESCO Dolomites to Ortisei. Val Venosta follows, with the submerged church tower standing in Lake Resia, and then the Stelvio Pass, forty-eight hairpins and the most photographed road in the Alps. The Bernina and Maloja passes then cross Switzerland on the way down to Lake Como.

Milan gets a free day, and then France takes over. The Piccolo San Bernardo, the Col de l’Iseran at over 9,000 feet, the Col du Telegraphe and the Col du Galibier come in sequence on the ride to Les Deux Alpes. Provence follows with the Gorges du Verdon, Europe’s deepest canyon, then the Route des Cretes and the Route Napoleon to Grasse, before the Col della Lombarda returns the route to Italy and the Barolo vineyards.
