12 nights through South Africa

The long version of the Garden Route, self-guided, with a safari in the middle of it. Thirteen days from Cape Town, twelve nights and around 1,320 miles, covering the full Garden Route, Route 62, the Winelands and Addo Elephant National Park.

The coast gets the first few days. Chapman’s Peak Drive, the Cape Point reserve and the penguin colony at Boulders Beach lead to Hermanus, then Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa with its 1848 lighthouse, on the way to Arniston. Mossel Bay gets a rest day, then Knysna and its lagoon cruise, and then the Tsitsikamma forests, with a canopy zipline available for anyone who wants it.

Addo is the centrepiece. The route reaches a private game reserve with a tented bush camp and dinner under canvas, then an anchor day covers a guided drive in Addo Elephant National Park and an open-vehicle safari at the neighbouring Schotia reserve, both of them Big Five country. The return runs inland on Route 62 through Oudtshoorn and Montagu, then Franschhoek, where the wine tram does the driving for a change, before Cape Town.

EAGLERIDER supplies the motorcycle and books all twelve nights, working with a local partner. Fuel, meals and insurance are separate. The tour is marketed as twelve days, but the operator’s own itinerary runs to thirteen days and twelve nights. For riders who want the Garden Route and a proper Big Five safari inside one trip, this is the version that makes real room for both of them.
