A guided expedition from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp and back, 2,100 kilometres across Nepal and Tibet on a new-model Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.

Nuwakot opens the route out of Kathmandu, then the climb to the border at Gyirong and onto the Tibetan plateau at Tingri, which sits above 4,300 metres and where the acclimatisation begins in earnest.

Shigatse follows, the second city of Tibet, with Tashi Lhunpo, the seat of the Panchen Lamas, then Lhasa, where the Potala Palace rises thirteen storeys up a hill above the city and the Jokhang remains the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism, with pilgrims still circling it. Gyantse comes next with its fort and its unusual tiered stupa, then Shelkar and Tashizom on the approach road, and Everest Base Camp itself at 5,200 metres, with the north face directly above. The return runs by Tingri and Gyirong back down into Nepal.

Best-class hotel accommodation, the airport transfers, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, all the meals, at least two experienced guides, full first aid, a support truck with a mechanic, all the permits and site entry fees, a cultural tour of Lhasa, the Base Camp visit and the Tibet entry visa are all included; flights, the Nepal visa, health insurance, gratuities, alcohol and any damage to the motorcycle are not, and a five-hundred-dollar bike deposit is required. The full day-by-day itinerary sits behind an enquiry form on the operator’s site. Altitude is the serious consideration here, since the route stays above four thousand metres for days at a stretch, and anyone with a heart or lung condition should take medical advice before booking.
