20 nights through India

Twenty nights from New Delhi into Bhutan and on to Kolkata, a classic car rally, 4,300 kilometres across northern India.

The Bhutanese leg is what sets this apart. Taking a field of classic cars into a country that admits visitors under a daily fee and does not permit independent driving is a considerable feat of organisation, and the operator reports a reception by the royal family at Thimphu.

Chandigarh opens it, Le Corbusier’s planned city, then Shimla up the Sutlej valley, with a rest day for the Raj-era architecture and the world heritage narrow-gauge railway. Rishikesh follows on the Ganges, where the Beatles spent several weeks in 1968, then Jim Corbett, India’s first national park and the first Project Tiger reserve, with safaris, and Palia Kalan for more. Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Darbhanga carry the route east, then Gorumara in West Bengal, and Bhutan, with Thimphu, the fifth-highest capital in the world, and the walk up to the Tiger’s Nest.

Three nights in Delhi beforehand with a welcome dinner, twin or double accommodation with breakfast on the event, group dinners except on rest days, occasional lunches, breakdown and medical support, car preparation and navigation guides, Tulip route books and a map book, GPS waypoints, rally plates and decals, finishers awards, two gala tickets, a results book and travel and medical insurance are all included. Eligible cars run from pioneer pre-1920 to classic pre-1985 and invited 4×4 classes. No wildlife sighting can be promised, at Jim Corbett or anywhere else on the route, however good the odds in a first-generation tiger reserve. Twenty-one days and four and a half thousand kilometres of Indian road is a considerable undertaking, and the Bhutanese section is the part no other operator offers.
