8 nights through Italy
Eight nights and around 2,055 miles from Folkestone through the Black Forest, the Dolomites and the Swiss Alps, and this is the operator’s hard tour: high mileage, high passes and experienced riders only. Own bike or a hired BMW.
The run out crosses to Wallonia, then Freiburg on the sweeping roads of the Black Forest, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen below the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany.
South Tyrol follows over the Penser Joch, the Passo delle Erbe and the Furkelpass to a ski resort base in the Dolomites for two nights, with a free day there for the Giau, Pordoi and Gardena passes. The Giau is the one to ride if only one is possible: a near-continuous stack of hairpins with far less traffic than its better known neighbours.
Davos comes next through Austria on a day of near-constant elevation change, then France by way of the Furka and the Oberalp, the Furka being the pass where the car chase in Goldfinger was filmed and which climbs to 2,429 metres with the Rhone glacier near the top. The Vosges and the Route des Cretes follow, a ridgeline road built by the French army in 1915 to supply the front, before the final evening in the Ardennes. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the tunnel crossing, maps and GPS routes are included. Fuel, other meals and the Swiss and Austrian vignettes are separate. The price is quoted per person. Eight nights for that mileage means genuine riding days rather than sightseeing with a bike attached, and the operator is clear that this is not a first tour.
