9 nights through Spain
Nine nights in the Pyrenees, which are quieter than the Alps and better for it, with the overnight ferry from Plymouth at each end. Own bike aboard the ferry or a hired BMW.
Santander lands it, then Vitoria, capital of the Basque Country, and into the Spanish Pyrenees to Tramacastilla de Tena, a mountain town at 1,200 metres, for two nights. A free loop day from there takes in the Aubisque, the Tourmalet and the Aspin, which is as concentrated a day of famous climbs as Europe offers: the Tourmalet alone has featured in the Tour de France more often than any other pass.
The route then crosses west into France and back into Spain to a Parador for two more nights, with the Peyresourde, the Portilhon and the road from Coll de Nargo to Berga, which the operator’s founder rates above all of them.
The N-260, the Eje Pirenaico, follows towards Sabinanigo, running the length of the range on the Spanish side, then the Col de la Pierre de St Martin and down to Pamplona for the farewell dinner, in the city that lets the bulls loose through its streets every July. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the return ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Two-night stays in two places are what separate this from a pass-bagging tour: there is time to ride a loop and come back rather than packing every single morning. The Pyrenees also stay rideable later in the season than the high Alps, which widens the window considerably.
