15 nights through France

Fifteen nights from Folkestone to Sardinia and Corsica and back, using three ferries and crossing the Alps on the way out. It is the longest tour in the operator’s range. Own bike through the tunnel or a hired BMW.

Troyes comes first, then Evian-les-Bains on Lac Leman, and Italy by way of the Grand St Bernard, the pass Napoleon’s army used in 1800 and where the monks have kept a hospice and their dogs for nine centuries. Genoa follows, and the overnight ferry south.

Sardinia gets four nights. Cala Gonone, a fishing port below the limestone cliffs of the east coast, takes two, then the ride across the sparsely populated interior to Alghero for two more, where the old town still speaks a Catalan dialect four centuries after Aragonese rule ended, and the Grotte di Nettuno are sea caverns the size of a cathedral.

Corsica follows by ferry to Bonifacio, a citadel town founded in 828 and built out over white cliffs, then the circuit of Monte Cinto, the island’s highest peak, to Calvi for two nights, and Erbalunga on Cap Corse with its Genoese tower. The ferry from Bastia returns the route to France for the Gorges du Verdon, the Route Napoleon, Burgundy wine country and a final night in Champagne. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the ferries and the tunnel crossing, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Fifteen nights is a serious commitment of holiday, but it buys two islands with some of the best coastal roads in the Mediterranean and an Alpine crossing at each end, with the ferries doing the dull mileage overnight.
