6 nights through Belgium

Six nights across the Ardennes through France, Belgium and Luxembourg, with two-night stays at two of the best castle towns in the region. Own bike or a hired BMW.

The route crosses from France into Belgium and the Semois valley, with the first night at Alle-sur-Semois, a village in a loop of the river with a boutique hotel. The Semois meanders so severely through this forest that the roads following it are almost all corners.

Luxembourg comes next, and Vianden gets two nights directly beneath its castle, which is among the largest fortified residences west of the Rhine, built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries on a forested hill above the river and restored from near ruin in the twentieth. A free day allows the castle itself or a ride out to the country’s only chair lift.

Bouillon follows on the Semois back in Belgium for two more nights, a medieval town below another imposing castle, the seat of Godfrey of Bouillon, who sold it to help finance his departure on the First Crusade. There are riverside walks for anyone wanting a day off the bike. A medieval fort in France takes the final group dinner before the run to the coast. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the Channel crossing, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. The Ardennes is close enough to be an easy first tour and wooded and hilly enough to be a proper one, and three countries in six nights costs nothing extra in mileage because the borders are barely twenty miles apart.
