14 nights through Italy

Fourteen nights from Nice to Sicily, top to toe down Italy, and this is a grand tour in the proper sense: four UNESCO sites, three of the great cities and a ferry at the end of it.

Nice starts it along the Ligurian coast to the Cinque Terre, five fishing villages stacked on cliffs above the sea with no road between them worth the name. Pisa follows for the tower, which still leans a few degrees after a long correction programme, then inland to Florence for two nights, with a guided walking tour and Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia.

Assisi comes next, medieval and hilltop, then Rome, where the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Forum, St Peter’s and the Vatican all sit within a short walk of one another and two days would not be enough.

The route then crosses the Della Majella national park to Sorrento on its cliff, with the option of the train to Pompeii, and takes the Amalfi coast, which is the most famous road in Italy and a good deal busier than it is wide. Alberobello follows inland for its trulli, conical dry-stone houses built without mortar and UNESCO listed, then Tropea on the Coast of the Gods at the toe of the country, and the ferry to Sicily for two nights near Ragusa with Etna in the distance. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Fourteen nights sounds generous until the list of stops is read, at which point it starts to look brisk.
