20 nights through Vietnam
Twenty nights down almost the full length of Vietnam, flying in and hiring a bike from the operator’s local BMW partner. It is three weeks of riding and takes the country from the Chinese border to the south.
The north starts it over the O Quy Ho, one of the highest and least forgiving passes in the country, to Sapa, with a free day for the ancient rock fields or the Tram Ton pass. The route then follows the Chinese border across the Dong Van karst plateau to the Lung Cu flag tower at the northernmost point of Vietnam, reached by 389 stone steps.
The Happiness Road follows over the Ma Pi Leng pass, cut by hand into vertical limestone cliffs above the Nho Que river in the 1960s and the most celebrated stretch of road in the country, then Lang Son and two nights on Ha Long Bay, where the limestone towers rise straight out of the water and the days go on kayaking, swimming and caves.
Hanoi gets two nights for the Old Quarter, the One Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum in the square where independence was declared in September 1945, the water puppet theatre and the lake. The route then runs south across the old demilitarised zone, with the Quang Tri citadel, shelled and bombed continuously for eighty days in 1972, then Hue and Hoi An, the Central Highlands and Ho Chi Minh City. The bike hire, hotels, breakfasts and the dinners listed are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate.
