Ride to the End of the World: Patagonia
A city that calls itself the End of the World waits after weeks crossing back and forth over the Andes between working ranches and glacial lakes – twenty nights the entire length of Patagonia.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
20 nights through Argentina
Twenty nights to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, with around 450 miles of gravel on the Carretera Austral and Ruta 40, and the Andes crossed repeatedly between Chile and Argentina. It is the most expensive and most demanding tour the operator runs.
The accommodation is part of the character: working estancias, remote lakeside lodges and small German-speaking communities founded by nineteenth-century settlers whose descendants are still there. Bariloche comes early, a town of chocolate shops and alpine architecture that could be mistaken for Switzerland until the condors appear overhead.
El Calafate follows, gateway to Los Glaciares and the Perito Moreno glacier, which is one of the few large glaciers in the world not in retreat, some three miles across at its face and around seventy metres high above the water, and which calves blocks of ice into the lake at unpredictable intervals. Ice walking on it is included. Torres del Paine comes next in Chile, with its granite towers standing over the plain.
The Strait of Magellan is crossed to Tierra del Fuego, then Ushuaia, Fin del Mundo, and Lapataia National Park at the end of the road, with penguin walks and horse riding on the steppe. The route finishes back in the Argentine Lake District. The bike hire, hotels, breakfasts and the dinners listed are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Patagonian wind is the thing nobody expects: it blows hard enough to move a bike across a lane, and it is why the gravel here is harder work than the mileage suggests.
