13 nights through Peru

Thirteen nights in Peru, flying in and hiring a bike, on a tour that alternates riding days with rest days and leans as much towards the culture as the roads.

Arequipa starts it, a UNESCO listed city built in white volcanic stone at 2,300 metres, with a baroque cathedral, the Santa Catalina convent, which operated as a closed city within the city for four centuries, and Juanita, the frozen body of a girl sacrificed on Mount Ampato in the late fifteenth century and preserved so completely that her hair and clothing survive.

The coast road runs north to Nazca and its lines, the geometric figures and animal shapes scraped into the desert floor more than fifteen centuries ago, which are legible only from the air and have survived because it effectively never rains there.

Cusco follows for three nights, the Inca capital and now a colonial city standing on Inca foundations, with a full day train excursion to Machu Picchu, where the dry-stone work fits without mortar and several structures align with the solstices, and a free day for the town itself. Puno closes the route on Lake Titicaca for two nights, the highest navigable lake in the world at around 3,800 metres, with a boat out to the Uros islands, built from floating reed and first made as a refuge from the Spanish. The bike hire, hotels, breakfasts and the dinners listed are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Rest days matter at this altitude, and this itinerary is built around them rather than in spite of them.
