20 nights through Norway

Twenty nights to Nordkapp at the top of Europe and back, through Norway, Sweden and Finland, ridden self-guided. Bikes are rented, with insurance and breakdown cover included.

Oslo starts it with bike collection, then the ride east to Stockholm, a city built across more than a dozen islands with copper spires and a harbour worth an evening. An overnight ferry crosses to Finland through the archipelago, where red boathouses stand on bare rock, and the route then turns north.

Lapland follows, and the reindeer there are not wild but herded, mostly by Sami families who have worked these lands for centuries, which is worth knowing before anyone leans on a horn. The road continues north to Nordkapp, the cliff on the Barents Sea that stands as the top of Europe, where in high summer the sun does not set at all and the car park at one in the morning is as busy as at noon.

The Lofoten Islands come next, reached by ferry back to the Norwegian mainland, with granite peaks rising straight out of the sea and fishing villages at their feet. The route then runs south along Lake Mjosa to Lillehammer and finishes at Oslo. The price is quoted per rider. Twenty nights is what the distances demand: Nordkapp is further north than most of Alaska, and the ride up and back is the trip itself rather than the means of reaching it. Self-guided also means the midnight sun can be used as it should be, with the riding done at whatever hour suits rather than to a group timetable.
