6 nights through United Kingdom

Six nights the length of Wales, self-guided from two bases, in the guest’s own car, with a guided tour of Portmeirion included.

The structure is the point: three nights in the north and three in the south, which covers two national parks and two coastlines without the car being moved every morning.

The Royal Oak at Betws-y-Coed takes the first half, a former coaching inn at the gateway to Eryri, with a welcome dinner and two free days. The Portmeirion tour falls in that half, round the Italianate village Clough Williams-Ellis spent fifty years building on a wooded estuary, with the Llyn Peninsula and the Cambrian coast in the road book alongside it. The transfer south then runs to Llangoed Hall near Brecon, a country house hotel with individually styled rooms, a spa and a two-rosette restaurant working from its own organic gardens, for Bannau Brycheiniog and the Cambrian Mountains, the Pembrokeshire coast, Swansea Bay, the Mumbles and the Gower, which in 1956 became the first place in Britain designated for its landscape.

Three nights at each hotel, six breakfasts, four dinners including the welcome dinner, the guided Portmeirion tour, a road book with maps, drives and local attractions, a commemorative rally plate and parking at both hotels are all included. Seven days covering north and south is the operator’s fullest Welsh itinerary, and the two hotels are deliberately different in character rather than interchangeable, which is a large part of why it works. Late spring to early autumn gives the best of the weather, and the drive between the two bases is an itinerary in itself: the mid-Wales roads through the Cambrian Mountains are among the emptiest in Britain.
