America's Deep South
Visit the only plantation museum in Louisiana focused exclusively on the lives of enslaved people, handled with gravity, then a private backstage tour of the Ryman Auditorium – fifteen nights through America’s Deep South.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
15 nights through United States
Fifteen nights from Nashville to Charleston, self-drive, across six states, through the music and the history of the American South.
The music is the reason most people book it and the history is what they remember. Both are handled properly here rather than glanced at, and several of the stops are serious places that deserve the time the itinerary gives them.
Three nights at the Hermitage open it in Nashville, with a private backstage tour of the Ryman, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Studio B, and a VIP tour of the Grand Ole Opry. Memphis follows for two at the Peabody, with Sun Studio, the Stax Museum, Graceland, and the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King was killed in 1968. Natchez comes next for a night at an 1818 house, then New Orleans for two, with a private tour of Whitney Plantation, the only museum in Louisiana devoted entirely to the lives of the enslaved people who worked the land, alongside a French Quarter food tour, a cocktail class and a jazz walk. Santa Rosa Beach, Savannah, Palmetto Bluff and Charleston close the route east.
The rental car, the named hotels with breakfast daily, every guided tour and visit listed, economy flights from London, the transfers and UK airport lounge passes are all included; an optional sailing trip at Sea Island is not. Spring and autumn are the seasons, since the Gulf states in August are punishing. Sixteen days and six states is a real drive, but the legs are broken up sensibly and the three-night stays at either end stop it feeling like one. Charleston at the finish, with its single-house architecture and its own difficult history, is the right place to end up.
