29 nights through Spain
Twenty-nine nights around the Pyrenees from Barcelona, self-driven behind a guide vehicle, with the fuel and tolls included.
Having the fuel and the tolls in the price is unusual and welcome on a month-long trip, and so is the honesty about what is not: lunches are extra and no upgrades are available on this one.
Barcelona opens and closes it, with Gaudi and the food. The Penedes wine region, the Costa Brava and Girona follow, then the Cathar country of southern France, with the world heritage fortress of Carcassonne and Rennes-le-Chateau, a village whose nineteenth-century priest and an elaborate twentieth-century hoax between them fed the mythology a famous novel later borrowed. Niaux Cave comes next, one of the last caves holding prehistoric art still open to visitors, then the Pic Negre at 2,643 metres on the Andorran border, Aiguestortes and Boumort, the Montrebei Gorge, the Tour de France cols through Gavarnie and Lourdes, Ordesa, the Mallos de Riglos, the Basque Country, the Bardenas Reales desert and vulture watching at Alquezar.
The transfers, the fuel and tolls, the 4×4 with standard insurance, a paper map, a two-way radio, all the hotels, all breakfasts and dinners, coffee and picnic equipment, a guide vehicle with a local bilingual guide and the listed activities and entrance fees are all included; airfares, lunches, drinks, tips, insurance, the vehicle excess and extra activities are not. Late spring to early autumn is the window, since the high cols close in winter and the Bardenas in high summer is extremely hot. Thirty days to cover a range four hundred and fifty kilometres long is generous, and it shows in the itinerary: both sides of the frontier, three national parks and a desert, with time to stop.
