6 nights through France

Six nights along the Route des Grandes Alpes, from Baden-Baden to the Cote d’Azur, over eighteen high passes.

The route itself is the point: seven hundred kilometres from the Alps to the Mediterranean with fifteen thousand seven hundred metres of climbing in it, which is a figure worth sitting with. Baden-Baden opens the trip at a Ferrari club with a barbecue lunch, then Chamonix, with a night at a chalet whose previous guests the operator is happy to name.

The passes come in sequence: the Saisies, Meraillet and Cormet de Roselend, then the Col de l’Iseran at 2,770 metres, the highest paved pass in the Alps, followed by the Madeleine, the Telegraphe, the Galibier, the Lautaret, the Izoard, the Vars, the Turini and the Bonette. The Cayolle, Valberg and Couillole drop the route towards Nice, then the Grande Corniche along the coast by Villefranche and Cap Ferrat, through the red rock of the Esterel, past the Monaco circuit and La Croisette at Cannes.

A roadmap and digital route, the nights at the named hotels including three on the coast, and lunches and dinners at a list of named venues along the way are included. Participants drive their own car or hire one. Seven days for this route is the right length, since eighteen passes cannot sensibly be done faster, and they are generally open from June to October. This is the tour in the range with the most cult status attached to it, and the finish on the Riviera is the part that sells it.
