Ultimate West Coast

Three weeks down the Pacific coast from Seattle to Los Angeles, and the only one of their long trips that spends real time in the Pacific Northwest. Flights, car and hotels are arranged together from the UK, with a road book for the route.

It opens with two nights in Seattle for Pike Place Market, the Chihuly glass garden and the original Starbucks, then two nights in Olympic National Park, which is three parks in one: the Hoh Rain Forest, the ridge road up to Hurricane Ridge, and the sea stacks at Rialto and Ruby Beach. Mount Rainier follows, then the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls into two nights in Portland.

The Oregon coast is the heart of it, 360 miles of Route 101 with the sea stacks at Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park at the top end and Coos Bay further south. Then two nights among the redwoods in northern California, Napa and Sonoma, and two nights in San Francisco. Yosemite gets two nights, reached through the Gold Country rather than over the Sierra. The last week is the coast again: Carmel and Monterey for two nights, Big Sur and Hearst Castle to Santa Barbara, and two nights in Los Angeles.

Around 2,050 miles, with almost every stop lasting two nights. Orange County, San Diego, Palm Springs and Las Vegas can all be bolted on if three weeks is not enough. The itinerary is bespoke and departures are arranged around your dates. It suits anyone who thinks of the west coast as California and has not yet found out what the two states above it are like.
