Southern Spain Extreme

Andalusia has the curviest roads in Spain and comparatively few riders on them. This tour spends eight nights hopping between four mountain ranges to find the best of them, starting and finishing near Malaga.

The route is a sequence of ranges rather than a single loop. Vinuela comes first, then La Calahorra below the Sierra Nevada, then Almeria for a rest day on the coast, then Burunchel in the hills. Cazorla National Park is the largest protected area in Spain and the roads through it are empty, well surfaced and relentlessly bendy, which is the combination this itinerary is built to deliver.

The second half collects the Sierra de los Filabres, the Puerto de Tiscar, the White Towns of Andalusia with their lime-washed houses stacked on hillsides, Alhama de Granada, the Guadalcacin reservoir and the Puerto de las Palomas pass. Between them the route crosses the Sierra Morena, Las Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada, so the altitude and the scenery change constantly even though the trip never strays far from the south coast.

For riders who find the Alps too crowded in summer, Andalusia in spring or autumn is the obvious alternative, and the roads give nothing away.
