Touring Center Dolomites

The Dolomites from a single base, with the same room for the whole week. Six nights at a four star hotel in Collalbo in South Tyrol, and a different loop ride offered each day, so nothing gets packed into a pannier except what is needed until dinner.

Five loops are available and the choice is made daily. One circles the Sella group, the cluster of pale limestone towers that most people picture when they think of the Dolomites. Others take the Mendola Pass or the Timmelsjoch, Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Belluno Dolomites or Kronplatz, and Lake Garda. The road surfaces here are excellent and the passes come in quick succession rather than separated by long valley slogs.

South Tyrol itself is part of the appeal. The province was Austrian until 1919 and remains German-speaking, so the language, food and architecture belong to one country while the passports belong to another, and the result is a region that feels distinct from anywhere else in Italy. Bolzano is a short funicular ride away and holds Otzi the Iceman, the roughly 5,000 year old body recovered from a glacier on the Austrian border in 1991.

Riding on any given day is optional, which makes this a workable holiday for a mixed party where not everyone wants to be on a bike every morning, and it is the cheapest of the operator’s Dolomites itineraries.
