Scottish Highlands & Isle of Man

Twelve days from Liverpool to Edinburgh, taking in the Isle of Man and the Highlands. The direction alternates by departure date, and the island is the part most riders book for.

Douglas gets the rest day, and the reason is the TT course. The Snaefell Mountain Course is thirty-seven miles of ordinary public road that becomes the most demanding motorcycle race circuit in the world for two weeks each year, and the rest of the time anyone can ride it. The mountain section has no general speed limit. Riding it is a genuine pilgrimage for a certain kind of motorcyclist, and doing it outside race fortnight means having it largely to yourself.

The mainland leg is strong too. Hadrian’s Wall comes on the way through the Lake District, the Roman frontier that marked the northern edge of the empire for three centuries. Edinburgh follows, then Ballachulish deep in the Highlands by way of Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, with the Isle of Skye and Inverness also on the route before the finish back in Edinburgh.

British weather is the obvious risk and the roads are narrower than anything in the Alps, which is precisely what makes the Highlands and the Manx lanes rewarding rather than merely scenic.
