Best of Greece

Fourteen days around mainland Greece, which is an underrated motorcycling country: the roads are quiet, the surfaces are better than their reputation and the archaeology is unavoidable in the best way.

Arachova comes first by way of Delphi, where the oracle sat for a thousand years and the ruins climb a hillside above a valley of olive groves. Kalyvia follows, then a rest day at Metsovo reached through the Pindos mountains, which form the spine of the country and carry the best riding on the trip.

Lefkada provides a change of pace on the Ionian coast, then two nights at Vytina in the Arcadian highlands and a rest day at Monemvasia, a town built on and under a vast rock joined to the Peloponnese by a causeway. Olympia and the amphitheatre at Epidaurus are both on the route. Epidaurus seats fourteen thousand people, was built in the fourth century BC and has acoustics good enough that a coin dropped on the stage can be heard from the back row.

Three rest days across the fortnight is a generous allowance and the right one here, because the sites take time on foot and the heat in high summer makes long riding days less appealing than they look on paper. For riders who want ancient history and empty mountain roads in the same trip, and who would rather not spend a fortnight in the Alps again, Greece is a strong and under-booked answer.
