Discover the Basque Country (Bilbao - Rioja Alavesa - San Sebastian)

A week in the Basque Country, which Caminos sell as their premium version and base entirely between Bilbao and San Sebastián. It is arranged as a fly-drive with the hire car included, or with the ferry and your own car.

Three nights in Bilbao start it, and three is right: the Guggenheim and the Bellas Artes are both worth proper time, and the coast beyond the city is the real discovery. Guernica is half an hour away, Mundaka has one of the best left-hand surf breaks in Europe, and Lekeitio is a working fishing harbour with a beach in the middle of it.

Two nights in Rioja Alavesa follow, the Basque end of the wine region and the prettiest part of it. Laguardia is walled and cellared underneath, Labastida sits below the sierra, and the Dinastía Vivanco museum is the best thing of its kind in Spain.

The last two nights are in San Sebastián, which has more Michelin stars per head than almost anywhere and a bay you would want to look at even without them. Hondarribia is along the coast towards France, the funicular up Monte Igueldo gives the view of La Concha that sells the city, and the flysch cliffs at Zumaia are sixty million years of rock laid out like the pages of a book. Seven nights across three bases. The price is per person for two sharing, bed and breakfast, with the car included; flights are extra. It suits anyone who wants the Basque Country specifically rather than a tour of northern Spain, and who considers dinner part of the itinerary.
