21 nights through New Zealand
Twenty-one nights across both islands of New Zealand in a motorhome, with the flights and hotel nights at either end included.
Auckland takes the first two nights in a hotel before the motorhome is collected. Waitomo comes first on the road, where the glow worms on the roof of the cave read as a night sky, then Rotorua, with the geothermal springs, the Maori heritage and the gondola up Mount Ngongotaha, and Taupo and Wellington beyond.
The ferry crosses to Marlborough, where most of New Zealand’s wine is grown and a night is spent parked at a vineyard. Nelson and Abel Tasman follow, with a cruise, a guided walk and a kayak among the granite headlands and the fur seals. Punakaiki comes next with the Pancake Rocks, then Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson, with a helicopter landing on both the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, and Queenstown through Mount Aspiring, with Milford Sound optional. Oamaru and its little blue penguins come before Christchurch.
Flights, two nights in a four-star Auckland hotel, fifteen nights of maui Beach motorhome hire sleeping up to four with zero-excess insurance, a night in Christchurch, the Waitomo admission, the Abel Tasman trip, the glacier helicopter and the ferry are all included; the one-way motorhome drop-off fee is payable separately at booking, and campsites are extra. Twenty-two days for the length of the country is a fair pace with a hotel at either end, which solves the problem of arriving jet-lagged and collecting a seven-metre vehicle the same morning. The glacier flights are weather dependent and the Cook Strait ferry wants booking well ahead.
