15 nights through Canada

Fifteen nights on and around Vancouver Island in a motorhome, with the flights and three hotel nights included.

Vancouver takes the first three nights, with a guided city tour, the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Granville Island, before the motorhome is collected and the ferry crosses to the island. Victoria comes first, with Butchart Gardens optional, then Campbell River.

The whale watching goes out from Campbell River for humpbacks, seals and orcas, the resident pods being present from the middle of July into September. Telegraph Cove follows, one of the last boardwalk settlements on the island, built over the water on piles, with hiking and kayaking. Tofino comes next by way of Sproat Lake, with two nights and a low-tide bear cruise, where the black bears forage along the shoreline when the tide is out and the viewing is done from the boat. Nanaimo closes the route with two nights.

Flights, three nights in a Vancouver hotel, eleven nights of motorhome hire sleeping up to six with a two-thousand-kilometre pack and insurance, the city tour and suspension bridge, the whale watching, the bear cruise and the ferries are all included. Sixteen days for an island this size is a slow pace, which suits a trip built round wildlife: both the bears and the whales are seasonal and tide-dependent. No sighting can be promised, and the ferries want booking for a vehicle this size. Tofino is also worth the long drive across the island on its own account, since the surf and the rainforest are the best on the coast.
