17 nights through Australia

Seventeen nights between Melbourne and Adelaide in a motorhome, along the Great Ocean Road, with the flights included.

Melbourne takes the first three nights in a hotel with breakfast, including a day on the Q Train, which combines a heritage railway, a sail and a meal on the Bellarine Peninsula. The Grampians follow, a sandstone range tilted up on edge with walking trails, wildlife and one of the most important collections of Aboriginal rock art in the south-east.

Apollo Bay comes next by way of Torquay, where the Great Ocean Road begins, with the Otway rainforest behind the coast and the seafood along it. Port Fairy follows through Port Campbell National Park, where the Twelve Apostles stand offshore as limestone stacks left behind by the cliffs eroding, with the Griffiths Island lighthouse optional. Robe comes next along the Shipwreck and Limestone coasts, then the Barossa Valley for tasting, and Adelaide for two nights.

Flights, three nights in Melbourne and two in Adelaide with breakfast, the Q Train and nine nights of maui Ultima motorhome hire for two with zero-excess insurance are included; national park entrance fees are payable locally. Eighteen days with five of the nights in hotels is a gentler arrangement than a pure motorhome trip. The Great Ocean Road is narrow and winding in places, with the best of the Apostles in the hour before sunset, once the coaches have gone. Southern right whales pass Warrnambool on this coast between June and October, which is worth knowing when picking dates, and the Grampians are at their best in spring.
