10 nights through Australia

Ten nights and 2,066 kilometres out of Adelaide in a campervan, across the Eyre Peninsula to the edge of the Nullarbor and back.

Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Kimba come first, the last marking the halfway point across Australia on its own sign, then Streaky Bay with a day there, where the sea lions haul out, the oysters are farmed in the bay and the cliffs north of the town drop straight into the Southern Ocean.

Ceduna follows at the eastern end of the Nullarbor, then Nundroo, which is the base for the day trip out to the Head of Bight. That is the point of the whole route: the Bunda Cliffs run for several hundred kilometres along the edge of the plain, and southern right whales come in to calve below the viewing platforms between June and October, close enough to watch from above without a boat.

The camper and the day-by-day plan come from Apollo, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Eleven days for 2,066 kilometres is a comfortable pace with an out-and-back shape, so the return covers ground already driven. The whale season is what fixes the dates: outside roughly June to October the Head of Bight is a long drive to an empty sea. The Eyre Peninsula also carries a fraction of the visitors the Great Ocean Road does and has better seafood and emptier beaches. Driving at dawn, dusk and after dark is where the risk lies.
