4WD Litchfield National Park adventure itinerary - 7 days - Britz

Litchfield sits two hours south of Darwin and holds its waterfalls close together, so this loop trades long driving days for the Reynolds Track, the sandstone blocks of the Lost City and swims at Buley Rockhole.

6 nights through Australia

Six nights and 600 kilometres in a loop from Darwin in a 4WD camper, through Litchfield, where the waterfalls sit close enough together to make the driving almost incidental.

Batchelor comes first on the park boundary, then Florence Falls, a double waterfall dropping into a plunge pool at the bottom of a flight of steps, and Buley Rockhole, a chain of small pools in a creek that is the best swimming in the park and consequently the busiest part of it.

Wangi and Tolmer Falls follow, then the Lost City, a cluster of weathered sandstone blocks and pillars reached on a rough 4WD track, and the Reynolds Track, which is the reason this itinerary needs a 4WD: it runs through the southern half of the park with creek crossings and leads to Tjaynera Falls and the Sandy Creek and Central Valley campgrounds. Greenant Creek and Berry Springs close the loop.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Seven days for six hundred kilometres means a great deal of time in the water and very little behind the wheel, which is the appeal of it. The 4WD tracks in the south of the park open later in the dry than the sealed sections, so timing matters. Swimming is only safe where the park has checked for crocodiles, and those notices change through the season.
