4WD Natures Way - Britz

Nine nights and 1,318 kilometres in a loop from Darwin in a 4WD camper, along Nature’s Way, finishing on the mangrove coast.

Kakadu takes the first days, with the Garnamarr campsite inside the park, which is the base for the 4WD tracks to Jim Jim and Twin Falls, and Cooinda for the Yellow Water cruise at dawn.

Gunlom follows, where a series of plunge pools step down the escarpment and the top one looks out across the whole park, which is arguably the best swim in the Territory. Katherine and Nitmiluk come next, with thirteen sandstone gorges best taken by canoe, then Wangi Falls in Litchfield, and Dundee Beach closes the route, a fishing settlement an hour and a half southwest of Darwin on a coast of mangrove and mudflat where the barramundi is the attraction.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. The 4WD is what buys access here: Jim Jim, Twin Falls and the Gunlom top pool are all beyond a standard camper. Those tracks open progressively through the dry and the park publishes their current state daily. Ten days is a sensible allowance, and the crocodile notices decide where the swimming happens rather than the map. Dundee Beach at the end is an unusual finish, since almost no itinerary goes that way, and it is a quiet last night an easy drive from the depot.
