20 nights through Chile

Twenty-one days through Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, one way, finishing as far south as a road goes. This is the longest guided tour the operator runs and the one with the most weather in it.

Osorno starts it, then Pucon by Lake Villarrica beneath an active volcano, then San Martin de los Andes across into Argentina through the Lake District. El Bolson follows, a town founded by hippies in the 1970s that still leans that way, and then Futaleufu back into Chile by way of Ruta 40.

The Carretera Austral is the heart of it. Chile’s southern highway runs for more than a thousand kilometres through fjords, temperate rainforest and glacial valleys, much of it gravel, and Puyuhuapi sits on it. El Calafate provides a rest day for the Perito Moreno Glacier, which is one of very few glaciers in the world not currently retreating and calves ice into the lake in full view, with Mount Fitz Roy nearby. Torres del Paine follows, then a crossing of the Strait of Magellan into Tierra del Fuego and a final rest day at Ushuaia.

Edelweiss include a choice of BMW motorcycle, twenty nights in comfortable middle-range hotels, a guide and a tour book. Flights are separate, into Osorno and out of Punta Arenas or Ushuaia. Prices run from 10,150 to 11,020 euros per person for 2026. Patagonian wind is the defining feature of riding here and it is relentless rather than occasional, which is worth knowing before committing three weeks to it.
