7 nights through Hungary
Eight days, six countries and around 1,600 kilometres from Budapest to the Croatian coast at Zadar, in a car built before 1997. The Balkan Rally is now in its sixth edition and the organisers describe this as their most ambitious route yet.
It is a rally rather than a race. The format is gran turismo: daily checkpoint challenges judged by a jury, five competitive categories and an awards gala at the finish, with the emphasis on navigation, consistency and style rather than outright speed. That makes it approachable for anyone with a suitable car and a sense of humour, and it is why the field tends to be as varied as the route.
The route itself is the draw. Hungary gives way to Romania, then Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is a run of countries very few drivers will have crossed in one go, on roads that range from fast plains to serious mountain passes before the Adriatic appears. Entry is open to pre-1997 vehicles, cars and motorcycles alike, or anything else the jury accepts as special.
Go Beyond includes the entry fee, seven nights in four and five star hotels on a half board basis, the opening ceremony, a rally kit and route guide, secure overnight parking every night, luggage transfer and recovery cover for the whole route. Lunches, insurance and any visas are separate, with a single room supplement and vehicle transport to the start line available as add-ons. One thing to note: the detailed day by day for the new route is not yet published, so the stage detail is worth asking for before committing.
