13 nights through Canada
Thirteen nights by hire car around the Bay of Fundy, which has the highest tides anywhere on earth and organises everything about this trip.
The range reaches sixteen metres, which is roughly the height of a four-storey building, and the volume of water moving in and out twice a day shapes the whole coastline. It carves the flowerpot rocks, exposes fossil beds, and brings up to fifteen species of whale to feed, along with hundreds of thousands of migrating shorebirds that stop on the tidal flats each summer to fatten up before continuing to South America.
The Reversing Rapids at the mouth of the Saint John River are the clearest demonstration. Twice a day the incoming tide overwhelms the river and forces it to run backwards through a rocky narrows, and there are brief slack periods between when boats can pass at all.
St Andrews-by-the-Sea provides the base, founded by Loyalists who left the United States after the revolution, several of whom dismantled their houses and brought them by barge, which is why Water Street looks the way it does. Whale watching runs from there, and Kingsbrae Garden is regularly voted among the best public gardens in Canada. Hopewell Rocks closes the route, walked at low tide and kayaked at high. Canadian Affair include the flights, the hire car and the hotels, with fuel, insurance and meals separate. The price is per person. Tide tables are worth consulting before planning any day here, because the difference between arriving at high and low water is the difference between two entirely different places.
