13 nights through Canada

Thirteen nights and 2,284 kilometres from Calgary to Whitehorse in a motorhome, through the Rockies and up the Alaska Highway, with two nights at most stops.

Banff and Jasper come first, linked by the Icefields Parkway, which runs 230 kilometres past more than a hundred glaciers with the Columbia Icefield at its midpoint and is among the great mountain drives anywhere.

Dawson Creek follows at Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway, built in eight months during 1942 as a military supply road and now sealed the whole way. Muncho Lake comes next, a long jade-green lake in the Northern Rockies with the road running along its shore, then the Liard River Hot Springs, where a boardwalk crosses a warm swamp to two pools in the forest. Watson Lake sits on the Yukon border with its signpost forest, and Whitehorse closes the route.

The motorhome and the day-by-day plan come from CanaDream, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with insurance options priced at booking. Fourteen days with two nights nearly everywhere makes this a holiday rather than a dash north, which the Alaska Highway rewards. The season is short, roughly June to early September. Wood bison, bears, elk and caribou all use this road, which makes dawn and dusk the hours to avoid driving, and the stone sheep at Muncho Lake stand in the carriageway for the salt. This is a one-way hire into the Yukon, so a relocation fee is worth confirming at booking.
