10 nights through Canada

Ten nights in a loop from Calgary, guided, through the Rockies and the Kootenays on roads that are almost entirely sealed.

The format is the selling point: a single guide, no chase vehicle, a maximum of six bikes and boutique hotels rather than motels, which makes it straightforward to book out as a private trip for a small group.

Calgary opens it, the 1988 Winter Olympic host city and the gateway to the mountains, with the bike paperwork and a meet on the first evening. Nakusp follows deep in the Kootenays, on the Arrow Lakes, which are long, narrow and crossed by free ferries, with hot springs in the hills behind the town. The remaining days run through the Rocky Mountain and Kootenay roads of British Columbia and Alberta, which between them hold the best motorcycling pavement in Canada: long passes, very little traffic once off the main highways and mountain scenery that does not let up.

The bike hire is included, with a BMW F750 or F800GS as standard and upgrades available; the full inclusions are not itemised on the operator’s page and are worth confirming at booking. Eleven days of sealed road with a pillion in mind makes this the most passenger-friendly tour in the range. June to September is the season, since the high passes carry snow outside it and the shoulder months can be wet. For anyone who wants Renedian’s way of running a tour without crossing a continent to do it, this is the short answer.
