8 nights through Spain

Eight nights across the Canary Islands in winter, riding Tenerife and La Gomera on bikes handpicked for the local roads.

Tenerife starts it with the group meeting and a welcome meal, then bike collection and a gentle shakedown ride, which is sensible on roads as steep as these. A ferry crosses to La Gomera, where the morning is deliberately unhurried, and the island holds Garajonay, a laurel forest of a type that covered much of southern Europe before the ice ages and survives here in the cloud.

The return to Tenerife takes the island’s mountainous spine from south to north across Teide National Park. Mount Teide is 3,718 metres and the third tallest volcano on earth measured from its base on the ocean floor, and the park around it is a lava desert that has stood in for other planets on film more than once. UNESCO lists it for its geological importance.

A hotel on the edge of Santa Cruz follows, then San Cristobal de La Laguna, the cultural capital of the islands and a UNESCO listed colonial town, and a scenic loop through the Parque Rural de Anaga, an ancient massif of knife-edge ridges and deep barrancos in the northeast corner. The bikes are then stabled and a final meal closes the trip. The price is quoted per rider, with separate rates for a rider and passenger and for two riders with two bikes. Winter is the season for this: the islands sit far enough south to be ridden comfortably in January.
